News and Notes for October 17th-21st

This week we will learn more about SELF-SACRIFICE through the story of how God protects Moses as a baby.

Moses’ mother, Jochebed, was in a difficult situation. If she kept her son, he would be found and killed by Egyptian officials. The only way to give him a chance to live was to send him away. It was a bold, painful move, filled with uncertainties; yet, she watched him float away toward what she hoped would be safety. She continued to be an important provider for Moses because Pharaoh’s daughter, who found him, needed someone to nurse him. Thus, Moses grew up in Pharaoh’s house. The relationships Moses built would play a critical role later when he would confront Pharaoh on behalf of God and the Israelites. Jochebed’s selfless sacrifice paved the way for God’s provision for His people.

I am pleased to tell you that we will be using a website called IXL in our classroom this year. IXL is a comprehensive learning program offering unlimited math practice problems in thousands of skills.  One of the best things about IXL is that your child can access it from home, so you have a chance to see your child's progress! Your child's unique username and password are in their planner.  You may download the app or use on any device's web browser to access the website.  Please let me know if you need any help.

Reading: Students are continuing to work on Main Idea and supporting details with nonfiction stories.  They will continue working in small groups to use the skill we have been working on these past few weeks.

Accelerated Reader is a program we use at CCLS to help with Reading Comprehension.  Students may use their login to check reading comprehension on their own books at home as well.  We will begin using AR after conference time during the second quarter.  You may have your child login at home as well to take quizzes from stories they have read on their own.

Art: Students will be creating a project that shows how Failure Leads to Success.  This is a great point I like to use throughout the year.  When we fail at anything in life, we can use that experience to help us improve the next time and hopefully succeed in the future.

Library Days: We have a new librarian this year, Mary Sullivan.  Please give her a kind CCLS greeting when you see her in the library. Our library day is always on Thursday.  Please have your student bring their library book(s) with them on Thursdays to renew or return.
We will not have library on Thursday, October 27 due to conferences so we will have library on Tuesday, October 25th that week.

Scholastic Book Club:  You may place book orders online through Scholastic Book Club through Friday, December 9th.  Check out the catalog online.  Please use our parent code to log in and order your books.  There is also a scholastic link to the Book Club page on the right side of this blog.  Happy Reading!
**If you are placing a Christmas book order please email me to let me know. I will get the books to you instead of the your student.**

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION

This week we will explore the virtue of RESPONSIBILITY through the story of Joseph. Joseph's older brothers were trusted by God and their earthly father with the responsibility to care for their brother. Instead of being their brother's keeper, Joseph's brothers gave in to sin, failed to keep their brother safe, and sold him into slavery. Sometimes sin takes over and jealousy and hatred consume our hearts making loving everyone very difficult. As God's serving leaders, it is our responsibility to love and care for others especially when it's difficult to do so.
As you talk about this big point with your child this week, please discuss that it is our God-given responsibility to love others, reconcile with those who wrong us, and care for everyone even our enemies and those people we don't like.
What is your purpose as a responsible and loving child of God?

Math: In Math this week the students will be working on lessons 17-18 with a Test on Tuesday.

Newsletter September 26th-30th

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECTThis week we will investigate the virtue of COURAGE. We will read about Jacob wrestling God in Genesis 32. As we try to relate to this passage, we will discuss how our lives are never meant to be easy. This is especially true when we take it upon ourselves to wrestle with God and His will for our lives. Oftentimes fear can overpower us. Through Jacob’s example and through our own relationship and “wrestling” with God, we learn that we can indeed trust the Almighty God and His promises.

I challenge you to discuss our "Big Question" with your child this week... How does trusting God give you the courage to face the fears you are wrestling with?

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT
This week we will explore the virtue of self-sacrifice with a rather tough reading from Genesis 22. Last week we learned about how God had made Abraham many promises that seemed impossible to fulfill.  However, Isaac's birth had brought great joy to Abraham and Sarah. He was the child they had waited for so long, and yet, this was the child that God now asked Abraham to sacrifice. It must have been painful to even consider. Because Abraham knew God's faithfulness and love, he was ready to give what he loved most back to God. God’s promises and strength make us capable of giving to Him and others.

I challenge you to investigate this virtue with us by having tough conversations at home about how you can give God what matters most to you.

Math: In Math this week the students will be working on their first review and first test on Tuesday.  Then we will continue with lessons 11 and 12.

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT
This week we will return to the virtue of integrity.

Integrity is God's power for you to be true to Him and yourself.

We will study this through exploring when God promised Abraham a son (Genesis 15-20).

I challenge you to discuss integrity at home and to ask yourselves...
How do you stay true to God's promises even when you don't understand God's plan?

Math: In Math this week the students will be working on lessons 7-10 and have our first Investigation on Numbers Lines.  Investigation are lessons that are different from the normal 30 problems and explore one specific concept through all the questions.

Reading: Last week students read The Mystery of the Missing Lunch.  The reading comprehension skill they worked on was problem and solution.  This week we will explore other books where they have to identify problem and solution.  Picture books make for a quick read and have so many great discussion points in them!  Use these types of books to practice this skill at home too.
