News and Notes for the Week of November 28th-December 2nd

Mr. Suarez, our student teacher, from Concordia University-Nebraska will be teaching math and reading classes over the next few weeks as he is finishing up his time here at CCLS.  His last day is Friday, December 9th.  Please pray for him as he approaches graduation in May and will be looking for a teaching job very soon.

MATH: In Math this week the students will be working on lesson 36-40.

Here is a great visual dictionary for Math ConceptsMath is Fun Visual Dictionary

I am pleased to tell you that we will be using a website called IXL in our classroom this year. IXL is a comprehensive learning program offering unlimited math practice problems in thousands of skills.  One of the best things about IXL is that your child can access it from home, so you have a chance to see your child's progress! Your child's unique username and password are in their planner.  You may download the app or use on any device's web browser to access the website.  Please let me know if you need any help.

READING: Students are working on identifying the Author's Purpose for why they wrote a story Persuasive, Informative, or Entertainment.

Accelerated Reader is a program we use at CCLS to help with Reading Comprehension.  Students may use their login to check reading comprehension on their own books at home as well.

ART: Students created video projects that shows how Failure Leads to Success.  This is a great point I like to use throughout the year.  When we fail at anything in life, we can use that experience to help us improve the next time and hopefully succeed in the future.  Enjoy the videos from their Seesaw accounts or from this link: Failure Leads to Success

LIBRARY DAY: We have a new librarian this year, Mary Sullivan.  Please give her a kind CCLS greeting when you see her in the library. Our library day is always on Thursday.  Please have your student bring their library book(s) with them on Thursdays to renew or return.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB:  You may place book orders online through Scholastic Book Club through Friday, December 9th.  Check out the catalog online.  Please use our parent code to log in and order your books.  There is also a scholastic link to the Book Club page on the right side of this blog.  Happy Reading!
**If you are placing a Christmas book order please email me to let me know. I will get the books to you instead of the your student.**

Supporting our Uganda Student at CCLS-U, Stacking Cup Information, and CCLS Auction News

Fundraiser for Ugandan Students
Fourth grade is raising money to support two students at CCLS-U.  We need to raise $500 for the two children to attend class for a year in Uganda.  The event that we used to gain support was the cup stacking we did on Thursday, November 17.  The pledge forms went home during that week and we would still like you to participate in the support of these two students by helping your child collect money from family and friends.  Our students can tell about the event and how much fun they had stacking cups to earn money and to help the World Sport Stacking Association with their 2016 Stack Up.  WSSA was attempting to break the world record set last year by having more than 618,314 people from all over the world stack cups for at least 30 minutes on a certain day in November.

Checks can be made out to CCLS, put Uganda Student on the memo line.

Thank you so much for helping us with this very worthwhile project.  The fourth graders pray for their counterparts in Uganda often during prayer circle time.  Please help the blessing continue.

Stacking Cups
All children in fourth grade will need a set of 12 stacking cups to use in class during 2nd semester of this school year.  I have set up an account with the Speed Stacks company.

When and Where Students Shop:
  • Our students will be able to shop from Nov. 21st to Dec. 2nd by visiting www.speedstacks.com/go and simply choosing "Christ Community Lutheran School" from the list (no password or code needed).
  • You will need to pay with a credit card.
  • You will not pay shipping as all the items will be sent to me at school and I will send them home with the children.
  • CCLS will receive 10% of all your purchase money to buy more products for the classrooms.
You certainly may purchase them somewhere else, borrow some, or use sets that belong to siblings.  You will find many options of fun things on the website, including timers, mats, etc. Please know that while those are fun to have, they are not required for our class.

Please mark each cup and other item your child may have with his or her name in permanent marker.  There are many similarities with these cups.

Hearts On Fire
As you know, the CCLS "Hearts on Fire" Dinner Auction will be held on February, 18, 2017!  The Classroom Challenge is a chance for all CCLS families to participate, even if they cannot attend the event.  Each classroom that collectively donates each of the following will be awarded a "Free Dress and Popcorn Day" (for Elementary and Middle School Classes) or "Teddy Bear and Popcorn Day" (for ECE Campuses):

  • 2 Volunteers
  • 2 Desserts
  • 2 Donated Items
  • 5 Tuition Raffle Tickets
  • 1 Table of Guests (1 table= 10 Guests)
Parents can sign up to contribute to their child(ren)'s Classroom Challenge by clicking on the appropriate link(s) below.  Classroom Challenge links will also be available on the Dinner Auction Website along with each classroom's progress towards meeting the Challenge.  The deadline for completing the Challenge is January 13, 2017.

News and Notes for the week of November 7th-11th

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION
Pharaoh and the Plagues

How can you choose to respect God and others
when you are plagued with trials?

Share this prayer with your family:
God, I give you authority in my life. I respect you and will show you respect in my choices, in my attitudes, behavior, and relationships. I don't always understand everything going on around me. Life can be uncomfortable and painful, but no matter the trials and struggles, I choose you and your ways. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

News and Notes for October 31st-November 4th

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION
Sometimes it can really be difficult to follow instructions. This week we will discuss integrity which is God's power for you to be true to Him and yourself.  Moses and Aaron followed God’s instructions with integrity, yet Pharaoh repeatedly failed to respond to or respect God. Despite Pharaoh’s cruelty of God’s people, God used Pharaoh to reveal Himself. God keeps His promises. This week, have conversations with your child about how God used Moses and Aaron to teach us about integrity. And remember, we live under God’s authority. His plan is full of integrity even when we are not.

Share this prayer with your family:Dear God, it can be really difficult to follow your instructions, especially when I feel pressured by other people to do something different. Still, I know you are the only one who can provide and guide me. You are my Deliverer. You have proven yourself as Lord. You have delivered your people over centuries. You are sovereign and you are trustworthy. I choose to honor you with integrity. I will live in your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

MATH: In Math this week the students will be working on lessons 26-28 and have a test on Tuesday.
