Newsletter October 28th - November 1st

Student Teacher: The new face around 4th grade is Ms. Peacock.  She is student teaching with Mrs. Brannan and I until Christmas.  She is completing her Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education through Concordia University - Seward, Nebraska.  Please give her a CCLS welcome when you see her. :)  

Math: Students will review Monday and test Tuesday over lessons 1-25.  Then they will work on lessons 31-33 this week.

Reading: Our theme this week is traveling.  Students will work on finding clues to make inferences about characters in our story My Diary from Here to There.  We will have a test on Friday over vocabulary words from this story and we will review vocabulary words from Mighty Jackie
Vocabulary Words: muttered, gaped, legendary, fluke, insult, flinched, snickering, overheard, unions, opportunities, strikes, boycotts, border, and citizen.
Art: This week students will begin learning about artists Sonia Delaunay and how she used different circles and colors to express herself through artwork.   
 


Library Days: Each Tuesday the 4th graders are able to select two reading books of their choice. Please note that books need to be turned in by 8:20 a.m. Tuesday morning.

From October - March your child will have an opportunity to fill out their Book IT! reading calendar saying they read 20 minutes a day.  When they turn in their form, they will receive a certificate to Pizza Hut for a free, one-topping Personal Pizza for their reading achievement.
Find a good book and start reading!

Newsletter October 21st and 22nd

Reminder: This week our schedule is different.
Botanical Gardens Field Trip - Monday, October 21st
Tuesday is an early dismissal day at 12:00, lunch will NOT be served.
Student-Led Conferences Tuesday afternoon/evening and Wednesday morning
Wednesday-Friday NO School

Please give a friendly CCLS welcome to our student teacher - Amber Peacock.
This quarter, Amber Peacock will be student teaching with Mrs. Brannan and myself.  Amber is a a student at Concordia University-Seward, Nebraska.  

Math: Students will work on Investigation 3 about Area as well as a project on area and perimeter.

Reading: Tuesday we will be reading a trade book Perimeter, Area, and Volume A Monster Book of Dimensions by David A. Adler.  This coincides with our math Investigations 2 and 3.

Book Reports are hanging in the hallway and look wonderful!  Make sure to check these out after your child's student-led conference.

Art: Louise Nevelson Sculptures are also hanging in the hallway, be sure to take a look at your child's beautiful masterpieces!

Library Days: We will have library again on Tuesday, October 29th.

Newsletter October 14th-18th

Math: Students will work through lessons 27-30 and begin a project on area.

Reading: We will continue to work with our Baseball theme this week and read the main story Mighty Jackie: The Strike-out Queen.  Students will be working on making inferences and analyzing the author's purpose for writing a story.  They will have a short quiz over Mighty Jackie: The Strike-Out Queen with vocabulary and a check point about author's purpose on Friday.

Book Report:  Mystery
Due: Thursday, October 17th
When reading their book, students should take notes on these items: main character, setting, conflict, supporting characters, rising action, connections, climax and resolution, and finally their personal review.  To find the notes page click here: Notes for Mystery Story
The final report will be typed in their Google Drive using a document I have created and shared with them. We will print them in class or you may print them at home.

Art: Please view your child's Animation Project: How Failure Leads to Success with them.  They look great!  Also, look for their completed sculptures hanging in the hallway.

October 7th - 11th Newsletter

Math: Students will have a review Monday and a Test Tuesday.  Then work on Lessons 26-27.

Reading: Our theme is appropriate for this time of year in St. Louis--Baseball.  The main story is Mighty Jackie: The Strike-out Queen.  Students will be working on making inferences and analyzing the author's purpose for writing a story.

Book Report:  Mystery

First typed review due October 11th. - We will begin typing in class.  They will have all week to type their notes. Next week will be used to polish up their sentences and check for grammar errors.
Final copy due October 17th.

Art: Please view your child's Animation project with them.  They look great!  Also, we have begun to paint the Louise Nevelson artwork.

Chapel Buddies: This week the 4th graders helped the Kindergartners make Fred Bird hats in honor of the St. Louis Cardinals making it to the playoffs!

Concordia Lutheran Church will host CCLS Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. service.
Mrs. Angela Shirley will be leading the children's message.
