Parents please join us Thursday, September 1st at  6:45 pm in the Fellowship Hall of the church for cookies and fellowship.  At 7 pm we will begin with a whole group presentation about upcoming school events and important news.

Then you will join your child's teacher in their homeroom class to learn more about their specific grade.  Classroom presentations will be in two time slots for families with multiple students.  The evening will conclude at 8:30 pm.

This evening is for parent's only; no childcare will be provided.

I look forward to seeing you on Thursday night!

Author Visit - Kate Messner

Image result for kate messner

We are so excited to have award winning author, Kate Messner at CCLS on Tuesday, August 30th.

Kate will kick off our year with an educational and motivational session about the writing process.

Visit her online at www.katemessner.com or purchase many of her books through our Scholastic Book Order link on the right side of this blog.

The 4th graders spent time reading a book from her Ranger in Time Series, Ranger in Time: Oregon Trail Rescue.

Ask your student about their favorite part of her visit.

Math Lesson 1 Writing Equations from Word Problems

Math: Lesson 1 is filled with quite a bit of information.  I want to make sure your child knows the basics from Lesson 1 before moving on in the book.

One section from Lesson 1 is writing equations and being able to solve them from word problems.  We learned how to solve equations last week.  Now we are dissecting word problems using the important information to write an equation.

We used the link here to practice this skill in class: Writing Equations from Word Problems
I encourage you to try some with your child at home too.  Remember it is not about knowing the final answer but setting the equation up on paper and being able to solve for that answer.

A Letter from Mrs. Killian

Letter from Mrs. Killian
August 2016

Hello CCLS 4th Grade Parents!

My name is Katie Killian and I have the great fortune of being your student’s music teacher!  A little about myself… I am a Wife, a Mother of 3 (a daughter who is attending Loyola University, Chicago this fall, a daughter who is a high school sophomore, and a son who is in 7th grade), a Singer, a former Preschool Teacher, the CCLS-Uganda Mission Coordinator, and a LOVER of CHRIST and MUSIC!

As most of you are aware, your child will be exploring and learning to play the recorder this year.  Any child who was unable to attend Charger Night prior to the start of school will receive a recorder and book from me the week of September 5th.  Recorders are not required for class until that week. You will need to fill the TADS account form being sent with the recorder to approve the $8.00 charge for the instrument, book and neck strap. The neck straps for the recorders are crucial because we need our hands free for clapping rhythms and playing other instruments at times throughout the class. Cleaning rods and cloths will be distributed as I teach the children proper recorder care and cleaning. I have carefully selected the best sounding and easiest to play recorder and it is very important for the students to have the same instrument. The quality of sound and the blending of instruments will make this experience more pleasant for all. Please contact me with any questions concerning the purchase of this beginning instrument.

We will be using the Recorder Explorer book enhanced with the “Recorder Karate” curriculum.  The children will be encouraged to work at their own pace and will earn “belts” as they master songs along the way.  The “belts” will be attached to a special ring on the end of their instrument as they pass each level.  I will record the “belt” songs on my blog, mrskilliansings.blogspot.com, so the students may listen and play along as needed.

This experience with the recorders is one I know the students will enjoy.  They will move on to 5th grade with a great foundation to begin playing a band instrument if that is in their future.  Please encourage your student to practice at least 10 minutes a day.  If they are experiencing any difficulties, feel free to contact me at kkillian@ccls-stlouis.org. It is important that the students come prepared to play their instruments so please help them remember to have them and their books in their backpacks on music days.

Thanks for supporting your student in their quest to make beautiful music!

Blessings,

Katie Killian

A Note from the Spanglers

Dear Friends,

Thank you for all of your prayer support and friendship throughout Matthew's heart surgery.  He loved the cards and gifts you poured over him this summer - especially during those 2 weeks in the hospital.  We are so blessed to report that Matthew's doing great!  Friday was his 8 week check up post-op, and he's been taken off all medications and cleared to participate in a lot more activities.  Thanks be to God!!!  Matthew continues to claim Joshua 1:9 as his Bible verse:  Be strong and courageous.  Do not be terrified!  The Lord your God is with you wherever you go!

On Sunday, August 28th we will be participating in the Congenital Heart Walk.  It takes place at Forest Park.  The walk begins at 10 a.m., so we will go to early church at Webster (since it's CCLS Sunday) and then head over to the walk following the service.  We'd love for you to join us as Team Matthew.  If you have a shirt, feel free to wear it but that's not necessary to walk.  There is also no donation necessary to participate, but you are welcome to donate to Team Matthew if you feel compelled.  The funds raised support research for children and adults with Congenital Heart Defects.  Here's the info if you would like to join us.

Thank you, friends!
Love,
John, Erica and Matthew Spangler
