Newsletter August 19-23

Math: On Friday the students started with Lesson 1 in Math.  We will continue through the lessons in chronological order.  This week we are working on Lessons 2-6.  Students must show all work on their homework in the work box and write all answers in the answers column.  There is a special math homework sheet available.  I always tell the students to keep a few extra in their binders but in case they forget there is a link to the math sheet on my blog or save a copy from here: Math Homework Form.

Reading: Each week in reading we have a theme of stories to read about.  This week our theme is Mysteries.  We will be reading "The Mystery of the Missing Lunch" as well as working on a problem and solution flow chart.  There is vocabulary and a short quiz at the end of the unit.

Remember to find your own free reading book to have at your desk or in Mrs. Brannan's room.

Art: Our first study in art will be a theme about how Failure Leads to Success.  We will begin with a class discussion on this idea and end by making an animation flip book about how they experienced failure in life but through trials we learn and succeed.

Looking ahead at our next project we need some materials.  Louise Nevelson was an artist who took items that may appear like trash to some people and created beautiful sculptures with them.  Your mission is to find pieces of plastics, woods, and metals that can be painted.  For example: bolts, screws, wine corks, puzzle pieces, buttons, small wooden objects, trinkets from a dollar store or garage sale are always popular.  Whatever you can find that meets these needs will be greatly appreciated to begin our projects.

Christian Character Development: Our study of Christian Character has begun with forming Friendship Balls and getting to know our classmates with short activities over the first two days.  We will continue to discuss and use groups to learn about Building Friendships and how to deal with struggles among friends.

Chapel Buddies: The 4th graders will be getting to know their chapel buddies this week.  The 4th graders are a huge help as they model behavior during chapel.  We also set aside a small amount of time each week to play or do activities with our chapel buddies.

Scholastic Book Club: You may place book orders order online through Scholastic Book Club through Friday, August 30th.  Check out the catalog online. Please use our parent code to log in and order your books.  There is also a link to scholastic book on the right side of this blog.  Happy Reading!
